Playing with Pin Tucks | White Doen Skirt Dupe

Playing with Pin Tucks | White Doen Skirt Dupe

A few white skirts have been on repeat on my Pinterest feed now for over a year. With white fabric languishing in my stash, I decided to finally dive in and figure out what my version of this skirt would be.

After studying the skirts I liked closely (linked here and here), I dove in. For my first prototype, I decided to use the skirt portion of the Orchards Dress by Vivian Shao Chen since I already had the pieces at hand. I like the fit and length of the long version so that was my starting point.

Changed I made:
-I added 5 inches to the length of the top skirt piece to accommodate the pin tucks and waist elastic
-Cut 3 lower panel tiers to make more volume on the lower tier.
-Added 3, 1/2in. pin tucks at the bottom of the upper tier.

To make the pin tucks:

1. I folded the bottom of the first tier up 6 inches and ironed.
2. Sewed ½ inch seam along the edge. Pressed this seam down

  3. Repeated these steps for the other 2 tucks, folding at 4 inches and 1.5 inches.

This is a great ruler for hemming and pin tucks!

The Result:

I am very happy with my first version of this skirt and will certainly wear it a ton this summer and likely into the fall with a sweater (like this). As white fabrics usually go, this skirt is a bit see through, so it will take some experimenting with underpinnings. I like its easy going style and I do like this proportion and length on me a lot! I'm itching to make more versions of this with patterned fabric & linens.

What I would do differently:

When I make a tiered and pin tucked skirt again, I would like to play with the placement of the tucks, likely moving them up a bit, with an inch or so. I would also like to experiment with the waistband, making the front a flat band, with only the back elastic for a more polished look.
